information
Petrantica, built in 1642, was born as a "post station" or a place of refreshment for the couriers who brought the mail from Syracuse to the Iblei, on horseback, through the ancient road "Elosine" built by the Greeks to connect Syracuse and Camarina.
Later these stations also became "inns" or "fondaci", intermediate stops that allowed overnight stays to coachmen and passengers, in addition to rest or change of horses, or repair of any damage to the means of transport.
The structure consisted of stables, workshops for the farrier, kitchens and houses where the riders rested during the night. Later it was used as an agricultural "masseria" or farmhouse for the breeding of cattle and the cultivation of the surrounding fields.
In 2010 it was renovated by the owners, in full respect of its original form, to give life to this ancient building full of historical and cultural value and to preserve its original function of conviviality and hospitality.
Petrantica is also an olive farm. It produces extra-virgin olive oil certified organic from an olive grove of 800 trees of varieties Biancolilla, Nocellara etnea and Nocellara messinese.
The method of production of the oil, from the field to the mill to storage, meets the requirements to obtain an oil with a high concentration of polyphenols and antioxidant properties and preventive against cancer, degenerative diseases and cardiovascular system: nutrition of plants with natural organic fertilizers, early harvesting of the fruit, milling at 25 ° C and microfiltration to avoid solid residues and preserve longer unaltered organoleptic properties.
The olive trees are cultivated in an eco-sustainable way, through minimal working of the soil, excluding synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, and enriching the biodiversity of the company with hedges and rows of Mediterranean trees and shrubs.
